A week in Crete forced to make choices. After visiting Heraklion, you can concentrate on the eastern part of Agios Nikolaos island in the palm grove of Vaï, passing through villages of the Lassithi plateau. It is less courie, but promises to take your eyes full!

Details of the stay: Eastern Crete - 8 days

Day 1 : Arrival in Heraklion

Arrival at Nikos-Kazantzakis Airport or in Heraklion Harbour. Walk in the city centre on the street of 25-Avgoustou, passing in front of the Fontaine fountain (place Venizelou), then continuing to market Odos -1866. In the afternoon, visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. At the end of the day, you can walk along the Venetian ramparts of the city, see the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis for literature lovers, and end up with a walk on the port towards Koulès Fortress as the sun declines. Later in the evening, if you want to enjoy the night animation, enjoy a drink in one of the bars in the Koraï district or Milatou street.

Day 2 : Cnossos Palace

Visit of Knossos Palace, 15 minutes from Heraklion by road. This palace of King Minos is one of the most famous Greek archeological sites. Visit it preferably early in the morning, then go to Archanès to visit one of the cellars of this wine region. Night in Archanès.

Day 3 : The villages of the Lassithi plateau

Departure for the villages of the Lassithi plateau. The road winds; You will be at the expense to enjoy the view of the bay and the mills, in the traditional villages of Krassi, Tzermiado and Psychro, where you will visit the cave of Dikti, where Zeus was born. Night in the typical village of Agios Giorgios, where you can buy beautiful handcrafted embroidery.

Day 4 : Towards Agios Nikolaos

Route for Agios Nikolaos with a lunch break on the square of Neapolis. Evening and night in Agios Nikolaos, Saint-Tropez of Crete, around Lake Voulismeni.

Day 5 : Island of Spinalonga

Excursion on the island of Spinalonga, where there is a Venetian fortress, occupied by a colony of lepers until 1957. Beautiful landscapes of the Aegean Sea. The second night in Agios Nikolaos.

Day 6 : Vaï beach and its palm grove

Departure for the beach of Vaï and its palm grove. Lunch in Palekastro and route for Zakros, then Kato Zakros. If you're on foot, get off the gorge, hiking is easy and beautiful. By car, you will need to take the bus the next day to join Apo Zakros. Swimming, dinner and night in the small bay of Kato Zakros, in a divine calm.

Day 7 : On the way back

First part of the return to Heraklion. You will sleep in Ierapetra or in the quiet village of Mirtos to cut off the road. Descend from Zakros to Xerokambos, on the beautiful road overlooking the sea in a desolate landscape worthy of a stone desert. Then move to the small village of Hametoulo, then Ziros on the plateau, before joining the main road leading to the south coast coming from Sitia. Here again, the panorama is magnificent. Follow the coast to Ierapetra. Dinner and night on site.

Day 8 : Arrival in Heraklion

Return to Heraklion after a small exploration of Ierapetra's hinterland over the village of Mirtos, or spend a last day perfecting your tan on the beautiful white sand island of Chrissi (return from the boat to 18 h, then a. m. road to Heraklion).
